SUMMARY:Stones Settlements and Orkney Traditions
DESCRIPTION:£65 \nThis tour explores how people in Orkney lived through the years from the ancient Neolithic period up until the last century.  It shows typical examples of their homes and gives you the opportunity to see how they prepared food and lived their lives with some traditions still living on to modern days. \nThe tour will leave Kirkwall for the Standing Stones of Stenness\, the oldest henge monument in Orkney \, hear tales of its place in history through the years.  We then move onto Skara brae\, a stone built settlement\, which was uncovered by a storm and eventually excavated.  It reveals several structures through time which show us how our ancestors lived.  Skara Brae sits on the beautiful and rustic shoreline of Skaill beach and on the grounds of Skaill house\, the largest manor house in Orkney.    We will then visit a local hotel for a light lunch before moving on to Corrigall Farm Museum\, a typical Orkney farm house and farm buildings.  It has a working barn\, grain kiln\, horse-drawn machinery and livestock.  A traditional peat fire helps to recreate the atmosphere of times gone by and hear local musicians carrying on the tradition of playing Orkney and Scottish music into our modern times. \nWe leave Corrigall and travel onwards through the village of Finstown and back to Kirkwall
