The Ness Experience Tour
Travel Back 5,000 years to the age of the First Farmers and Monument Builders in Orkney
The Ness of Brodgar is Britain’s most impressive Neolithic archaeological excavation. Orkney Heritage Tours offer you the opportunity to explore the world-renowned dig in the company of your very own archaeologist who will explain the fascinating story emerging from this special place in the midst of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site.
You will see behind the scenes at the site and travel back in time 5,000 years to the time of the early farmers. You will see the latest discoveries as they happen and will have the chance to discuss the very latest research and theories with your archaeologist guide and other members of staff on site. This is a once in a lifetime experience and one that you will remember forever!
Departing from Kirkwall Bus Station at 9.15am, 12.20pm and 2.50pm your guide will talk you through the archaeology of the islands and put the Neolithic monuments into their wider context, as you travel by minibus to the dig. On arrival at the site your private tour will last an hour and, being in a small group of maximum 15 people, your archaeologist guide will show you research excavation areas of the dig usually off limits to the visiting public – in addition to the main dig itself. You will then be escorted back to Kirkwall and have more opportunities to ask more questions of the archaeologist.
Overall the tour takes approximately 2 hours.
This is an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the Neolithic at the incredible Ness of Brodgar and is perfect for people looking to feel the excitement of a major archaeological dig happening before their very eyes.
