– Fidra 🙂

I was there to represent OHT alongside our tour provider’s (OCTO) Manager Hazel. This opportunity was provided via Destination Orkney. They are an umbrella organisation which supports those “with an interest in the successful and sustainable development, management and marketing of Orkney as a visitor destination.”

Destination Orkney

There are 500 members of Destination Orkney which shows that despite being a relatively small community, we are very busy! Since coming to Orkney I have benefited from their work through networking and access to training workshops. I particularly enjoyed their Autumn Tourism Week which was a great introduction to key sustainability issues faced by different sectors in Orkney. This was great timing for me peek behind the curtain into how things work here, which would have been hard otherwise as most visitor sites close for the chilly winter!

Expo Experience

In the Expo’s bustling hall, it’s hard to stand out. Destination Orkney managed with a custom booth displaying Orkney’s most iconic sites which drew many compliments. Hazel and I found our visitors to be already enthralled with Orkney, yet they were still impressed with all there is to do and see up here.

It was great to work alongside Elaine Tulloch (CEO), Kathleen Hogarth and Gareth Chrichton (Chair). Their knowledge and passion for Orkney really shone through throughout the busy days. Through them and our visitors I learned a lot about the travel trade.

At the expo 340 businesses, regional groups, charitable organisations etc were represented. I was amazed with the creativity of some of the stands and the overall range of places and products on show. It was great to meet people and share our love of Orkney with potential visitors.

Greetings from the mysterious isles of Orkney! Let me introduce myself, my name is Fidra. My namesake is also an island, in the much more southerly waters of the Firth of Forth. Like my namesake, I am not an Orcadian. I grew up in the scenic hills of Perthshire and recently arrived on Orkney’s shores to work for the community interest company OCTO as Graduate Travel Development Coordinator.

Working for a Community Interest Company?

I’m helping the Orkney Community Transport Organisation build their online presence, plan exciting tours and support their work in many more ways. OCTO works as a community interest company, meaning that their profits support a local charity – the Orkney Disability Forum. OCTO also provides high quality tours around the top sites of the islands through Orkney Heritage Tours, those profits also support ODF.

For the next wee while I’ll be updating the wider world on my experiences and what I learn about Orkney as I go. Watch this space!

Although you can visit the site of the Ness of Brodgar on your own, I highly recommend this small group tour with a guide and transportation from Kirkwall three times per day during July and August. This should be the #1 rated historical site in Orkney! The Ness is an ancient site that was either a marketplace or religious center just a stones throw from the ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe. People of all ages can enjoy this tour and there is no physically demanding terrain. It’s very windy so dress warm.

We had our first tour of Tunes, Tastes and Ancient Sites with some lovely guests from the cruise ship Norwegian Jade. The Barony Mill were very accommodating fitting us in before their film crew arrived with celebrity cook, James Martin. This was followed by beautiful music from Emma and Andrew from Skeldro, what a treat for everyone while we had a light lunch including bere bannocks and bere shortbread in the Birsay Hall. Thank you to Orkney Blide Trust for supplying the soup, this is a mental health charity doing a lot of good work locally. Then off to Skara Brae and a cheeky unscheduled stop at Yesnaby before the Standing Stones of Stenness. Really like this tour and it seemed to go down very well with our guests.

Our next tour will be on Sunday 10th June. Our 16 seat minibus will leave Kirkwall Travel Centre at 9.15 am. This may suit visitors from Cruise liners, Silver Cloud, AIDAluna or Silver Spirit.
